Catching up on quilts

I am a bit behind on posting my quilts.....so here goes...

This is from Kaffe Fassett's Passionate Patchwork book....the "Fonthill Quilt"...

there are several more borders to go on it! Lots of 1.5 inch half-square triangles forming sawtooth borders and pinwheels. These are separated and held together by a soft green floral.

More borders to come!

Now a look at my "Sakiori" quilt from the book "Japanese Quilt Inspirations" by Susan Briscoe.

Here the top and back are basted together for quilting. I love the cheerful bird print on the back!

The finished quilt, mostly machine quilted (on an antique Singer 301) and hand-quilted in the gold circles.

Hexagon quilt

A beautiful sunny morning after a stormy night...so much rain this spring!

Mom is sewing down the binding on this small quilt. I pieced the quilt last spring.

It is machine quilted in the idtch around the blocks and "big stitch" quilted with pearl cotton in the hexagons.

After the washing, things change!

Before free-motion quilting and washing, the edges of the colored scraps are neat and tidy....

......but not that way after the first washing. The washing makes it pucker up and soften, it mkaes the edges ravel and fray. [ I was compelled to trim off most of the "strings"... It is standard crib size, 45'X60"].

I used binding scraps to keep the colors moving, even on the binding. [of course you can't see the binding in this photo .]

Recyled Holiday

I found this doily for 50 cents at a thrift store. it was stained but cleaned up nicely! Last night was time to make something with it...we've been snowed in so using what I had was necessary! I used some small red velveteen pieces, some batting scraps for stuffing and added dried lavendar in the middle of the stuffing. So it is a 9" X 11"
sachet pillow and is on it's way to one of my Valentines!

A bird, flowers, the moon reflected on the water....art quilts are fun! this one also has a ceramic button! I am keeping the edges and the stitches primitive and irregular. Getting started on Indigo Reflections art quilt

Beginning a small art quilt with my collection of indigo fabrics...some hand dyed. some Bali batiks, some from Shibori Girl.

Working this way is new to me, I have learned a lot from Jane LaFazio who teaches for Joggles. Jane is offering a 6 week on-line art quilt class this coming March.
I will be stitching this and a small beaded quilt of pomegranates which I hope to enter into our Quilt show this April.

This is the quilt on our bed now...I had hung the angel above the bed and then found this folkart wedding quilt which seems to go with it so well! Meanwhile, I finished the quilt I was making for this new bedroom.....
So, I guess I will soon try it on our bed, under the angel watercolor.

This is the quilt top I am working on for the new bed. I like the soft/bright pastels which go well with the honeydew colored walls.

The blocks are 8" blocks and the entire quilt has a contemporary, Zen-like, feminine feel!

Recently my friend Paula came by and I gave her 2 wall hangings from my collection. [I do have a lot of quilts!!!LOL!] Here I am holding her quilts!

The Maypole Quilt

This is the Maypole quilt pattern from Moda fabrics. It was designed to feature the Maypole collection by April Cornell. My version does have some of her fabric, by co-incidence, and features my collection of striped fabric along with myriad florals! [click on any photo for a closer view!]
This weekend is May 1st so finishing it today was timely! I started it last year as a class sample. It grew into a small bed quilt. When I was ready to begin quilting, I had to pull together a backing. I took things from my stash, including 2 blocks! One is a house block saved from about 1993. The other is the daffodil block of the month block which I made for the class this recent March. I love how it brightens up the back and makes the house block feel "distant".

The house block called for something special. So, I found some bees in my stash and now they will buzz above the house, giving their own "magic"" energy!

I try to be practical and not acquire things that I don't need.....but I couldn't help myself this time!

I have been enchanted with the aqua color ever since I first saw one of these Singer 337 machines made in Clydebank, Scotland in 1964. Now, I own this one which was brought into the shop by a 90 year old sewist who is down-sizing.

As you can see, it is perfect for patchwork. As soon as I locate a walking foot, I can do quilting with it too. To me, it is a type of "eye candy". Sigh!

Lavendar tea bag sachets

Use fresh lavendar and string to create these charming sachets. The originals are by Laurraine Yuyama, of Patchwork Pottery. Her blog is also fresh and charming!

Simply Delicious

From several years back....an applique pattern was much loved!
This is a quilt called "Simply Delicious" by "Piece 'O Cake" quilt designers.

I was going through a closet in the studio yesterday and found this bag.

Inside are two completed blocks from the quilt, the pears and the apples. I plan to make 2 more, the plums and the peaches. Luckily, the patterns are still available and can be downloaded (for $3.00) each from here !

Red Sky at Night

This is a scrappy quilt which I am teaching the beginning quilters this month.

The pattern, "Red Sky at Night" is a "BIRDS IN THE AIR" variation and is in the July 2007 issue of Fons and Porter's "Love of Quilting" magazine. It is a wonderful design to use some of my stash of 1980's Ginny Beyer fabrics and VIP Cranston Print works!

Great Nieces and Nephews Need Quilts Too!

These are quilts for children. 2 "boy" quilts and 2 "girl" quilts.
The boys are brothers who live in Colorado.

The girls are sisters who live in New Zealand.

I used Kaffe Fassett and other florals for the little girls and fabrics with a Western feel for the brothers.

Luke's quilt

I received this card from my friend, Barbara. It shows her grandson, Luke, examining his quilt,... after exclaiming "Wow!"
It is a bright little boy's quilt with fabrics featuring cartoon characters and Oriental calligraphy! Here is Luke, a very happy little toddler!

Floral Parade Crib quilt

The blocks are 8" finished. The quilt top is 40 X 56. I may add a small border....

Shop Models

Yesterday I got busy at the sewing machine and made this 80x65 " quilt top.

It is to be a shop model for a local quilt shop which stocks a lot of Kaffe Fassett fabric. I love the clear pastels and gorgeous prints...all accented with the stripe! This is a very summery and soft quilt, I can hardly wait to get it back and quilt it!

Fa-la-la-la-la

I am madly sewing hanging sleeves onto quilts....and I even hope to get this new quilt pulled together and ready for the show....Ho, Ho, Ho!
This one is called "Reggae Rhythm" because it has African fabrics as well as wild contemporary fabrics (which are scraps from "burp cloths" which I sewed for the baby while at my daughter's, LOL!).

Meanwhile, Mr. Pear has hopes of his own, and has pulled all of our Christmas decorations out of the attic. He is on the right track, it is definitely time to get some of that up and celebrate the season. I can see it will be a busy, fun weekend!!!!

Getting ready to hang

It is 2 days away from a quilt/art show which I am having with a friend at our local Episcopal church parish hall....

My sewing machine is warming up so I can sew bindings and hanging sleeves on these quilts!
I'll post some photos early next week of the show after we have hung it!

This folk art bible quilt is one of the most interesting I have made.

Patterns were from Jan Patek. Many of the Old Testament Stories are illustrated, as well as the nativity, the wedding in Cana and the Resurrection!

The quilt with scrappy nine-patches is one I made and sold a few years ago.

The one on the right, I call "Summer Window" is going to hang in my art show this November.

More of my past unearthed at my Mom's....this is an article from Quilt magazine in September 1981.
I was truly in love with quilt-making!

The title says, "An Innovative Quilter-" the large bed quilt features a center grouping of fan blocks and lots of room for pretty handquilting! It was purchased from me by a dear friend and fellow quilter who was so encouraging to me in those early years, Mary Jo Dalrymple.

The 3 wall-hangings were Castlewall (2 versions in larger photos) and Clamshell (small photo). They published directions for my "clamshell" quilt.....which you can hardly see here!

In the 1980's we were always on the look-out for any all cotton fabric which would work well in our quilts...we could call each other and spread the word when we found some!

Today we have many gorgeous fabrics to work with...here are some of the fabrics I will be making into quilts this fall....and winter, I'm sure! These are mostly by Kaffe Fassett, wonderful colors, design and visual texture!

New Zealand Baby

This is a baby's nursery in New Zealand.

Here is the mom, Krista with Eva Gabrielle. They (and her handsome dad),were

at the wedding this weekend.

They sent the photo of the quilt I made for their daughter. It is nice to see that they

love it enough to decorate around it!

Wedding quilt almost finished

These blocks have now become a bed-size quilt! (see 2nd photo)

The blocks are scrappy and feature fabrics which remind me of summer in a mountain meadow....Andrew and Mary met in the Tetons two summers ago.

I got it back Sunday from my friend Darlene, who has "Sew Graceful Quilting", a long arm quilting service. She does beautiful work! I asked her to quilt it loosely and she did....fluidly and loosely, looping feathery shapes in a meandering pattern.

I still have to sew the bright blue binding on it and send it to the kids....their wedding is coming up! August 11th!
Bright blue for the binding, will pick up the center of each block which is a 4-patch of various blues and white.

Golden Curry

I am making a "brick" pattern wallhanging using my Kaffe Fassett fabrics, with others. This will be a hanging for the art show I am doing with my friend Tracie at St. Paul's Epsicopal church this coming November...I want lovely rich pieces to hang there!

Family connections

Having a quilt shop for 11 years gave me a
lot of time to make things for and with
those I love!!!!!!!

Here, in May 2000, my daughter stops in
with my 10 month old granddaughter. My
mother has come up from Little Rock for
the Mother's Day weekend. Four genera-
tions in the shop that day!

The next photo shows my mother sitting by a window in a farmhouse in Wisconsin.
We went to visit my niece and her family that summer.
Mom worked on quilting a pink and brown basket quilt
which I had pieced. It is now owned by my daughter.

This last photo is also in Wisconsin...my great-nephew, Lane. He is reacting to a quilt which I made and brought up there for him.....He loved orange to I used lots of orange around fabrics featuring objects he would recognize....cows (they have a dairy farm), tractors, Big bird, Bob the Builder, etc.

He just said, "WOW" !

Morning Glory quilt

The fall of 2000, a school near my quilt shop had a fence covered with beauty!
Morning Glories!

My friend Tracie , who was spending some time at my quilt shop/retreat center, offered to help me make the hand-appliqued blocks for the morning glory quilt. She even went by the school and took a photo of the flowers for us to enjoy!

Here are some of the blocks we made....the round close-up
of the morning glory alternates with the more geometrical
trellis block! The finished quilt was 3 times this size....

This quilt was sold to someone who fell in love with it....another to a good home!

A garden gate quilt

A charming pattern, was it from "Country Threads?" I forget....

But since I had a garden gate like this and a black cat who could strike the same pose, I was compelled to make this one!

However, it was a very HOT summer that year...

2000....I chose cool and frosty colors for my Garden Gate quilt. The orange traditional pumpkin turned into a "ghost" pumpkin...a pale white/green orb. I used lots of blues and lavenders...and turned my red and white flag stripe fabric to the "wrong" side for a paler frosty effect. I liked the morning glory block so much, that I ended up making and selling a morning glory quilt* later that summer.

Sunflower Baskets

A quilt photo found in a scrapbook from 2001.

This is a quilt top I made from a pattern in a Fons and Porter magazine.

I sold the top to Lonetta Blevins, who then had it hand quilted.
The baskets, in reds, blacks and golds, are machine pieced and the sunflower border is fused and blanket stitched on the machine.

A wonderful look for sunflower lovers!

National Quilting therapy

After September 11, 2001, a quilt shop in Georgia, Little Quilts, asked for small quilts to be sent to them to give to the families of all the firemen who perished in the World Trade Center.

I made one (the "flag" log cabin on the bench photo) and sent it in...they sent me back a postcard saying they had recieved 2,200 small quilts....and the photo of them all layed out together!

Now my daughter lives just "up the road" from "Little Quilts" and I was able to visit the shop recently....what a treat! I did forget to mention to them that I had sent a quilt back then!

Blooming 9 Patch

This old polaroid is of the first "blooming 9 patch" quilt I made. From a pattern by Blanche Young. It is so much fun...each new fabric or row of "blooms" is added gradually by mixing it with the fabric of the last row before it is allowed to stand on it's own....a lovely colorwash result!

This queen-size quilt helped my daughter to start her internet travel business, as it was given by me in partial payment to the talented young woman who designed her first "Caribbean Journey" website!

Lili's Caribbean Beach Quilt

This is a photo of my then 3-year old granddaughter in her bedroom...standing on the bed for the photo shoot only!!!!

Her wall quilt is of beach cottages, cabanas, and palm trees with a sandy beach and"snail's trail" ocean waves. It is a paper pieced quilt from a commercial pattern. It was fun to do, and is embellished with all kinds of buttons, parrots, fish, bananas in the palm trees, a cat in a window...flowers in the gardens and on the trees.

The bed quilt is a wonderful, crazy quilt done in brights....lots of squares within squares and checkerboards. From a quilting magazine....

Both were made by me and machine quilted commercially.

May Basket quilting

These baskets are scanned off of a small lap quilt which I made for my daughter, Laura's 16th birthday. She has a May first birthday...so I always think of lily of the valley for her too!

I was looking through some old photo albums and found this one...probably around 1980.

I sent a indigo blue and muslin basket quilt, which I had made, to my sister-in-law for Christmas.
I know they have treasured it in the years since! It went to a good home!

(This quilt was machine pieced and hand quilted.)

I found this old photo from 1982....the children playing in my pine chest and a Churn Dash or Hole in the Barn Door pattern quilt. I was in the process of doing the hand quilting using a wooden hoop.

Grandmother's flower garden

I have to post this in it's current state because blogs may be obsolete by the time I finally finish it!

This is a good example of the journey being as important as the destination. I did not inherit a traditional grandmother's flower garden quilt so I felt I needed to make my own. Each rosette takes about 3 hours of peaceful, meditative hand piecing using the English paper piecing method.

I get burned out and put it away...then bring it out and start again....it was a good thing to do last night when I needed to stay off of my feet because of tendonitis...

Teton Meadow Quilt top

This quilt top is going to the machine quilter, Darlene, today.
It is for the coming wedding of Andrew and Mary in Flagstaff this August.
They met in the Tetons, in the summertime, so the theme for the wedding is mountain
wildfowers.
I tried to make their quilt using a meadow border and the colors of wildfowers and summer skies in the west.

Family Valentine Quilt

Two more blocks from a small quilt made about 10 years ago. (see the entire quilt in the first photo)

It features the date of our wedding and the birthdates of our children...I think I need to add the granddaughter...but I might be starting something if I do.....

These blocks are string-pieced using pink and red fabrics and a special fabric with calligraphy wording...

Family Valentine Quilt

This is a portion of a string-pieced romantic Valentine wallhanging....about love, friendship and family...including pets....

I will scan and photograph more of it as Valentine's Day comes. This was made in 1994.

St. Bridget's Cross

This is in anticipation of February 1st which is St. Bridget's feast day.
I made this quilt using a block designed to look like St. Bridget's cross, for a young couple who were being married at the Vatican.
I used fabric on the back which looks like illuminated manuscripts...one legend of St. Bridget says she founded two monasteries where illumination of biblical texts was done.

This is a little different!
Doing a scrapbook in fabric. The first block in a millenium quilt made to remember the year 2000.

This one shows several commemorative fabrics and one representing the fireworks we saw in our town square (which is on a mountain top)...the clock for time passing...champagne and a full moon!

Quilts for Twin Girls !

These are two crib quilts for the newest babies in the family.

The bunnies are hand-appliqued and machine quilted. The "Jewel Box" quilt is machine pieced and machine quilted.
Both are with clear pastels reproduced from 1930's fabrics.

Nana's Garden Quilt

This is the "Nana's Garden" quilt which I gave to my mother. It is queen-size and has a border of periwinkle blue rose print...only later did I remember that my mom does not really like "blue" roses!

Monet Lily wallhanging

Again, a colorwash where the small squares of color are chosen to blend into the adjacent squares...loosing many of the pieced lines.

This one has a hand-appliqued lily in the center and a print of Monet inspired waterlily pond fabric for the borders.

Ladybird lap quilt

Based on a quilt designed by Barb Adams and Alma Allen, this is an appliqued folk-art quilt. It is hand-appliqued and hand quilted. The bird represents the feminine spirit.It is owned by Rebecca Harrison, a local author. (She says wrapping up in this on a cool morning helps get her creative energies flowing!)

Monet Colorwash Quilt

This is our king-size floral colorwash quilt.

This is a machine-pieced and machine quilted quilt...the first photo shows it hanging in a quilt show.
It is made from 6" squares of many floral fabrics...with hidden images like wicker chairs, brown garden bunnies, small teapots...arranged from darkest floral prints to pale washy cloud blue sky print at the top. The border features a waterlilies fabric very similar to work by Monet.
This is the quilt we use in our bedroom.

Scot's Plaid

This is one quilt (twin-sized) which I didn't sew myself.

My employee, Ann, machine-pieced it after I chose the fabrics. (Thank-you, Ann!)

Walk in the Woods

This earthy, scrappy quilt works up the wildest fabrics you can find.

This is the 2nd of these quilts which I made. It belongs to my brother-in-law , Peter.

(One Thanksgiving, my grown children and my grandaughter were guests of the New England relatives...I sent along a quilt for each relative!)

Scrappy bullseye quilt

This is a scrappy quilt made by sewing conentric circles of fabric onto a background block raw edges up...the cutting the block into 4 equal sections, trading sections with friends if you like, and sewing them back together, to make "whacky" circles.

This quilt belongs to my husbands niece, Kendall.

Chinese Coins Floral

Another vertical scrappy, strippy quilt.

I loved the beige and coral floral print...just split it and added panels of irregular stacked "coins" (paper foundation string-pieced on old phone book pages)

Can't remember if this was sold or given away....!!!!

Flying Geese Again

This is another scrappy Flying Geese throw....made in 1998....similar colors to the one from 1982, but fabrics with border designs are much easier to find...especially when one owns a quilt shop!

Given as a gift to my husband's Aunt Hanni.

Red "Snowflakes"

This is a small quilt I use every Christmas!

I worked on it for 10 years, hand-piecing a block each autumn...and finally hand-quilting it in 2002.

The pattern is a feathered star and each one has 90 triangles around it..... I think they look like snowflakes even if they have too many points!

These are two quilts with similar color palettes. The one above is the most recent, made in 1999-2000. I call it "Turn of the Century Quilters".
It has a photo transfer on muslin in the center of a young girl using a tredle sewing machine ...about 1900....then the large muslin area is signed by my quilting friends and customers from the year 2000. The border is made up of a sampler of 9 inch blocks. This quilt is dusty aqua, browns and beiges.
The Flying Geese quilt is one I made in 1981-1982. It is machine pieced and hand-quilted. I was so excited to find a border print fabric to cut into strips for the long printed lattice pieces. It is afghan-sized and great for taking naps!

Birds in the Air

This is a scrappy machine pieced full sized quilt which I made for my sister. I used lots of bold colors and narrow black sashing.

It has been machine quilted.

Contrary Wife

This machine-pieced patchwork block has the charming name of "Contrary Wife".
I kind of like that...all blocks have many names of course, but I think being contrary is somtimes necessary and shows "spunk".
She is not a doormat!
This is hand-quilted, by me. It is queen-sized.The subtly striped lattice and large red and beige check cornerstones add an extra bit of pizazz!

Christmas Log Cabin Quilt

This is a "straight furrows" variation of the log cabin quilt block. It features a large center of old gold fabric and "logs" of red and green on the dark side of the block. The light is scrappy whites and off-whites.

This twin-sized quilt was machine quilted and is sold.

Wall Sampler

This is a basic sampler quilt which was a class sample from the days when we taught beginners to do every thing by hand...hand pieced, hand appliqued and hand quilted.

I treasured this for many years...though I never used it on my walls!

3 Small Quilts

these pastel quilts illustrate how I love to work with florals....sometimes making them almost "mush" together to loose their distinct edges in a mass of soft color.
The crib quilt to the left here has a bunny tea party theme...the others are just simple scrappy florals.

All of these have been completed and gone to good homes!

Two Wall Quilts

The log cabin featured a Hoffman collaged sewing fabric in pale green with black, pink and lavender.
"I brake for Quilt Shops", etc....

The Panda was developed from a pieced teddy bear block and is framed by bamb00 frabic and prints of African animals...especially zebras.

Aqua Strippy Floral Throw

A Kaffe Fassett fabric with large cabbage roses on dusty aqua is the thrilling featured fabric in this large throw (nap) quilt.

It was purchased by a woman who fell in love with it and just knew it was what her husband needed for Christmas!

Pretty Prairie

This quilt with large (14X18") applique blocks has a wonderful folkart feel. The patterns were designed by Terri Thompson whose grandmother raised 11 children on the Kansas prairie.

I love how the simple images reflect the beauty in ordinary things.

My dear friend Sally (from the North Dakota prairie) now owns this double bed sized quilt.

Pinetree Wallhanging

Birds and Blossoms

These small wall hangings (under 30" square) were done as part of a challenge for our quilt guild's show.

We had to use certain fabrics and were free to add a few more of our choice.
The first quilt is mine (now owned by Marica Thaxton who loves having songbirds come to her garden). I added a print with red background with features small birds and twiggy branches, a lavender "fluffy" blossom print, and a pale batik background. I appliqued the bird and three-dimensional blossoms....and in the border corners I have used three dimensional, folded "flying geese" that "point" and pull the eye around the outside. There are also several "button blossoms"
in the piece.

The lower one shows how the main challenge fabric appeared....leaves of chard by Kaffe Fassett...done in red-orange and orchid on a brown background. (So , can you tell I love fabrics?) This wallhanging was done by my friend Paula Mariedaughter.

Elegant Wedding Quilt

This is a machine-pieced and machine- quilted
queen sized quilt. It was a gift for the wedding of our nephew, John and his bride, Krista.

They were married on a romantic beach in New Zealand....so the outer border print on this has little "grains of sand" and the quilting is "champagne bubbles".

This is my sister-in-law, Melody with her daughter, Harmony.

Behind Harmony is a quilt of challenge blocks using a bright wild fabric. These were cut and set together "whacky" for even more visual fun!

Melody is in front of a one-patch quilt featuring apricot and red...one of my favorite combinations. Some of the fabric had the old hymn, "What a Friend we have in Jesus" printed on it....this reminded me of going to my grandmother's small church when I was very young. My sister, Elaine now has this quilt.

Between them is a small wall quilt called a watercolor or colorwash quilt. It was made in 1992 before I opened the shop in 1993....we taught that class avery year or so as people loved playing with the colors!

One is a scrappy crib quilt which I made and sold.

The quilt in the background was done with fusible applique blocks with scrappy pieced lattice and is a light-hearted garden themed quilt. It has also gone to a new owner.

Postcards from The Past

This is a quilt which was made as a shop model but has very personal family history. Each of the 12 applique blocks is hand appliqued and represents a month of the year. The pattern was designed by Robyn Pandolph.
I added embellishments and wrote the birthdays of members of our family on it. I gave this one to my mother for Christmas in 2003.

This is the dolly quilt with tea cups which we made together....
She went with me to the quilt shop almost every day....
In these photos, she is learning to do the buttonhole or blanket stitch....around the tea cup shape!

Bed of Roses

This is a crib quilt made and sold as a shop model when I had my quilt shop. It has layers of fabrisc cut in uneven circular shapes and then left "raw" to fuzz, curl and generally add texture to the romantic little quilt.

Mountain Meadow blocks

This is the beginning of a wedding quilt for Andrew and Mary....the colors and fabrics represent mountain wildflowers. (Mary and Andrew met in the Tetons in the summertime.)

English Garden Quilt

This quilt has a large border of a gazebos and garden gates.The string-pieced blocks feature flower prints as well as windows and roofs of gray stone houses or churches. The lattice between the blocks is a gray stone print representing a path or more stone walls.
I gave this to some dear friends Sally and Gary who are wonderful gardeners....both of souls and of the earth!

ZEN quilt

This is my Japanese indigo quilt which I gave to my future daughter-in-law, the lovely Mary.
She treasures it as a work of art and it hangs above the futon bed.

Shane's Quilt

This is a quilt which my sister helped me to make. It was for a cousin whose home had burned.....we used a random piecing method and incorporated as many western and masculine fabrics as we could find in my scrappy stash! We bought a black background boot print for the border.
It grew and grew and is at least a large queen-size quilt!

Quilt For Eva Gabrielle

This is a quilt for a baby girl in New Zealand.
Eva Gabrielle was born in December and I was able to get her quilt off to her just before Christmas!

Chains of fun for Lilia!

This is a twin-sized quilt for my grandaughter,
Lilia.
It is a double 4-patch for the most part...

As well as new fabrics in pinks, lavenders, blues, and purple, I used scraps from her dresses, nightgowns and pajamas. It went home with her this Christmas and I hope she is loving it!

JUST BREATHE

This is the "Just Breathe" when it was a quilt top....it is twin size and will be for my son.

The blocks are purposely "whacky" and uneven, then squared up to fit together.

It is scrappy and freeing....sometimes in life, we need to remember to just "breathe"!

French hens log cabin
